  51. SOUND TYPES:
  52.      Digital Audio     = Recorded sounds, usually speech and sound effects. 
  53.                          These sounds are played back by the Digital-To-
  54.                          Analog Converter (DAC) on the PAS.  Designated by
  55.                          the ".WAV" extension.    
  56.      Synthesized Audio = FM sounds, usually music but can also be used to
  57.                          produce speech and sound effects.  These sounds
  58.                          are played back by the FM Synthesizers on the PAS. 
  59.                          Designated by the ".MID" extension.
  60.      CD Audio          = Sounds produced by the CD-ROM drive which can be
  61.                          heard when connecting the headphones directly to
  62.                          the CD-ROM drive.  Also known as Red Book Audio.
  63.      PC Speaker        = Crude music tones, speech and sound effects 
  64.                          produced by the System Timer Chip on the
  65.                          motherboard.  These sounds are played back by the
  66.                          internal PC Speaker.

  134. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:
  135.  
  136. *******************************INSTALLATION********************************
  137. 1.   Q:   Do I have to change any switches or jumpers before I install the
  138.           PAS?
  139.      A:   The default settings will work in most computers.  Only try with
  140.           different DMA and IRQ settings if you experience any problems. 
  141.           Whenever changing the settings on the PAS, make sure you make the
  142.           same changes in the MVSOUND.SYS statement, in CONFIG.SYS.
  143.  
  144. 2.   Q:   What is the MVSOUND.SYS driver for?
  145.      A:   You must have "DEVICE = C:\PROAUDIO\MVSOUND.SYS D:X Q:X V:X" in
  146.           the CONFIG.SYS file.  The first two X's correspond to the DMA
  147.           channel and IRQ settings.  The third X in "V:X" represents the
  148.           initial volume level, a value between 0 and 40, where 40 is the
  149.           maximum volume level.  This driver resets the mixers and the
  150.           volume settings on the PAS.  Without this driver, none of your
  151.           Adlib games will play sounds.
  152.  
  153. 3.   Q:   I have tried with all settings and PASTEST.EXE still fails.
  154.      A:   First, PASTEST.EXE may need to be run twice in a row.  Second,
  155.           reduce the system to a generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to
  156.           eliminate possible software conflicts.  Third, remove all
  157.           unnecessary peripheral boards (scanner, tape controller, network
  158.           cards, etc.) in the system to eliminate possible hardware
  159.           conflicts.  Fourth, in most computers, it will accurately report
  160.           if there are conflicts; however, in some 486/33 computers, it may
  161.           not be accurate.  If you have already tried everything and
  162.           PASTEST still fails, go on and run AudioLnk.
  163.  
  164. 4.   Q:   After I have installed the PAS and connected the PC Speaker cable
  165.           to the PAS, I do not hear any PC Speaker sounds in my 486/33.
  166.      A:   Some 486/33 computers do not allow the PAS to implement PC
  167.           Speaker sounds.  Therefore, leave the PC Speaker cable on the
  168.           motherboard so that these sounds will be produced by the
  169.           motherboard and played through the internal PC Speaker.
  170.  
  171. *********************************AUDIOLNK**********************************
  172. 5.   Q:   a.   When I run AudioLnk to play MIDI, it does not produce any
  173.                sound.
  174.           b.   When I run AudioLnk to play WAV, it does not produce any
  175.                sound.
  176.           c.   When I run AudioLnk to play WAV, it plays the same sound
  177.                over and over like a broken record.
  178.      A:   a.   If MIDI does not play, it is a possible IRQ conflict.  
  179.           b.   If WAV does not play, it is a possible DMA conflict. 
  180.           c.   If WAV plays like a broken record, it is a possible IRQ
  181.                conflict.
  182.  
  183.           First, you must have the sound drivers (TAPIMV/VMP/AUDIOMAT)
  184.           loaded prior to running AudioLnk.  Refer to the AudioMate Section
  185.           in the PAS User's Guide.  Second, select a different DMA/IRQ and
  186.           try again.  Whenever changing the settings on the PAS, make sure
  187.           you make the same changes in the MVSOUND.SYS statement, in
  188.           CONFIG.SYS.  Third, reduce the computer's bus (I/O CLK) speed to
  189.           10MHz or less and try again. 
  190.  
  191. 6.   Q:   When I run AudioLnk to play CD-Audio, the CD-ROM drive's light
  192.           does not come on and I do not hear any sound.
  193.      A:   You may need to press F3 twice in a row.  
  194.  
  195. 7.   Q:   There is a lot of noise in the microphone recordings.
  196.      A:   First, make sure that the microphone has 600-ohm impedance (or
  197.           higher).  Second, mount the microphone on a stand instead of
  198.           holding in your hand.  Third, use headphones instead of external
  199.           speakers/amplifiers to eliminate the possibility of feedback
  200.           which can cause distortion or noise.
  201.  
  202. 8.   Q:   Running PAS.EXE to adjust the mixer and volume settings before
  203.           going into AudioLnk does not make any difference at all.
  204.      A:   First, AudioLnk ignores the settings made in PAS.EXE.  Second,
  205.           once inside AudioLnk you can adjust the mixer and volume settings
  206.           by pressing F4 to activate the Recording Menu and then F9 to
  207.           access the Mixer Control Panel. 
  208.  
  209. ********************************SP SPECTRUM********************************
  210. 9.   Q:   When I bring up Sp Spectrum (by running SEQ.BAT), TAPIMV.COM
  211.           reports that it cannot find the interrupt.
  212.      A:   Edit the SEQ.BAT to add the "/IRQ:X" switch to the end of the
  213.           TAPIMV.COM statement, where X is the IRQ setting, and try again.
  214.  
  215. 10.  Q:   When I run Sp Spectrum, I do not hear any sound when it is
  216.           supposed to be playing.
  217.      A:   First, make sure the port in Sp Spectrum is set to 2 to use the
  218.           FM synthesizer chips on the PAS.  Port 1 is for playing through
  219.           an external MIDI equipment.  Second, select a different IRQ and
  220.           try again.  Whenever changing the settings on the PAS, make sure
  221.           you make the same changes in the MVSOUND.SYS statement, in
  222.           CONFIG.SYS.  Third, reduce the computer's bus (I/O CLK) speed to
  223.           10MHz or less and try again. 
  224.  
  225. 11.  Q:   Page 18 of the Sp Spectrum Section in the PAS User's Guide refers
  226.           to the Tutorial file which I cannot find.
  227.      A:   The current version of the PAS disks has this file.  Please send
  228.           in your PAS disks to the attention of Customer Support.  Include
  229.           your name, address, phone number and a note to request for an
  230.           update.
  231.  
  232. ********************MPU-401 AND SOUND BLASTER EMULATION********************
  233. 12.  Q:   a.   Does the PAS support MPU-401?
  234.           b.   Does the PAS support SB?
  235.      A:   a.   No.  The MIDI Interface chip on the PAS is the Yamaha 3802
  236.                MIDI controller and not the Roland MPU-401 MIDI Interface
  237.                chip.  
  238.           b.   No.  The method used on the PAS to record and play back is
  239.                different on the existing SB card.  
  240.  
  241.      Note:     Media Vision has developed an emulation program which
  242.                enables the PAS to emulate the MPU-401 in "DUMB mode" and
  243.                the SB to work with most SB games.  Please note that this
  244.                program requires a 386SX or better and will work in DOS and
  245.                Windows 3.0.  This emulation program is called SB2MV.ZIP and
  246.                is located in the ZIP files area of this BBS.

  248. *********************************GAMES*************************************
  249. 13.  Q:   My PAS is set to DMA 3 and IRQ 5.  I hear music but I don't hear
  250.           any sounds when running Sierra games that support the PAS.
  251.      A:   The PAS driver in your Sierra games require that the PAS is set
  252.           for DMA 1.  Some Sierra games also require IRQ 7.  Sierra is
  253.           working on updating the PAS driver to allow DMA 1/2/3 and IRQ
  254.           3/5/6/7 to be selected.  Please contact Sierra for the update.
  255.  
  256. 14.  Q:   I have games/software that provide drivers for the SB and AdLib. 
  257.           Which driver should I select?
  258.      A:   The PAS is 100 percent AdLib compatible and will work with any
  259.           package that provides driver for AdLib.  If the package does not
  260.           support digital audio, then the AdLib driver or SB driver can be
  261.           selected.  Otherwise, if the package does support digital audio
  262.           with the SB driver, please refer to the "MPU-401 and Sound
  263.           Blaster Emulation" section above.
  264.  
  265. 15.  Q:   Does the PAS make my game sound better than my AdLib board?
  266.      A:   PAS.EXE is a utility that allows you to adjust the mixer, volume
  267.           settings, bass, treble, loudness, enhanced stereo (will make a
  268.           mono signal simulate stereo), and realsound (to improve PC
  269.           speaker sounds).
  270.  
  271. 16.  Q:   Sometimes when I play a game that supports AdLib, I only hear
  272.           sound out of one speaker.
  273.      A:   There are two ways to run PAS.EXE.  The first way is to run "PAS
  274.           RESET" to reset the mixer.  The second way is "PAS *" to bring up
  275.           the Mixer Control Panel on screen.  Press F1 to get help, then F4
  276.           to reset the mixer.
  277.  
  278. 17.  Q:   The joystick does not work at all or does not work properly when
  279.           using the PAS's joystick port.
  280.      A:   First, some computers have a built-in joystick port on the
  281.           motherboard.  Other computers have a multi-I/O board that has a
  282.           joystick port.  Make sure that only one joystick port is enabled
  283.           and the other one is disabled.  Second, if the computer is too
  284.           fast that may also cause a problem.  Reduce the computer's BUS
  285.           (I/O CLK) speed and try again.  Refer to your computer user's
  286.           guide for instructions on how to adjust the BUS (I/O CLK) speed. 
  287.           Third, contact the game manufacturer to ask for a joystick driver
  288.           that works on fast machines.
  289.  
  290. *****************************SCSI INTERFACE********************************
  291. 18.  Q:   Which CD-ROM drives can I use with the PAS?
  292.      A:   See CD-ROM Drives Support List above.  The PAS has a SCSI
  293.           interface which only allows it to control SCSI devices.  Please
  294.           contact Media Vision Sales for the SCSI Cable/Driver Kit
  295.           (Internal/External).  
  296.  
  297. 19.  Q:   Do I have to use the PAS SCSI interface to control my CD-ROM
  298.           drive which has its own controller?
  299.      A:   If your CD-ROM drive is SCSI, you can use its own controller or
  300.           the PAS SCSI interface.  
  301.  
  302. 20.  Q:   Can I use the PAS to control other SCSI devices?
  303.      A:   Yes.  Trantor Systems is currently selling SCSI drivers for the
  304.           PAS for a variety of SCSI devices (hard disks, removable media,
  305.           optical, etc.).  Please contact Trantor Systems for the PAS
  306.           driver set at (510) 770-1400.  The price for the driver set is
  307.           $59.00.
  308.  
  309. 21.  Q:   Will the SCSI interface on the PAS conflict with another SCSI
  310.           controller if they are both installed in the same computer?
  311.      A:   They should work fine together.  Make sure that the drive ID's
  312.           for the SCSI devices are different.
  313.  
  314. ************************CD-ROM DRIVE INSTALLATION**************************
  315. 22.  Q:   I get the error "No SCSI host adapter found".
  316.      A:   First, the SCSI CD-ROM driver is board dependent.  If you would
  317.           like to use the PAS to control the CD-ROM drive, you need to use
  318.           our TSLCDR.SYS driver; otherwise, if you would like to use
  319.           another SCSI controller (such as Adaptec or Future Domain) to
  320.           control the CD-ROM drive, you need to use its driver (contact the
  321.           SCSI controller manufacturer for the driver).  Second, check the
  322.           internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable to make sure it is properly
  323.           connected to the PAS.  Third, make sure the red painted edge of
  324.           the cable is closest to the 4-pin connector on the PAS at J6. 
  325.           Fourth, make sure the terminator is connected securely to the
  326.           back of the CD-ROM drive.  Try both with and without the
  327.           terminator.  Fifth, reduce the system to a generic CONFIG.SYS and
  328.           AUTOEXEC.BAT.  Sixth, reduce the computer's bus (I/O CLK) speed
  329.           to 10MHz or less.  Seventh, if there is a co-resident Thunder
  330.           Board, make sure Switch 4 (FM synthesizer switch) on the TB is
  331.           set of OFF.
  332.  
  333. 23.  Q:   I get the error "No devices respond on this SCSI host adapter".
  334.      A:   First, check the internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable to make sure it
  335.           is properly connected to the back of the CD-ROM drive.  Second,
  336.           make sure the terminator is connected securely to the back of the
  337.           CD-ROM drive.  Try both with and without the terminator.  Third,
  338.           make sure you have inserted the computer's power plug into the
  339.           CD-ROM drive connector and pushed it firmly into place.
  340.  
  341. 24.  Q:   I get the error "Device driver not found: MVCD001.  No valid CD-
  342.           ROM selected".
  343.      A:   First, if you are using DR DOS 6.0, it is necessary to change the
  344.           device name for both the TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE statements
  345.           from "MVCD001" to "TSLCD".  Second, make sure that the device
  346.           names in both of these statements match.
  347.  
  348. 25.  Q:   MSCDEX.EXE issues the error "Incorrect DOS version".
  349.      A:   If you are using MS DOS 5.0, MSCDEX.EXE v2.2 requires that
  350.           CONFIG.SYS has the statement "DEVICE = C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE".  We
  351.           will make an announcement in the BBS Newsletter when the new
  352.           version of MSCDEX.EXE is available, which will not require
  353.           SETVER.EXE when using MS DOS 5.0.
  354.  
  355. 26.  Q:   I cannot use the CD-ROM drive.
  356.      A:   First, refer to the questions listed above.  Second, make sure
  357.           the MSCDEX.EXE statement precedes any menu, DOS Shell, PCTOOLs,
  358.           or any desktop manager statements in AUTOEXEC.BAT to ensure that
  359.           the driver has been properly loaded.
  360.  
  361. 27.  Q:   I get the error "Invalid drive specification" when I type the
  362.           drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
  363.      A:   First, make sure you have "LASTDRIVE = X" in the CONFIG.SYS,
  364.           where X is the next logical drive letter after the letter
  365.           assigned to the CD-ROM drive in the MSCDEX.EXE statement. 
  366.           Second, make sure that the TSLCDR.SYS driver statement precedes
  367.           any driver statement that creates a RAM drive such as
  368.           RAMDRIVE.SYS.  Third, check if the TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE
  369.           drivers have been loaded up properly.  If not, refer to the
  370.           questions above.

  372. 28.  Q:   I get the error "CDR 101: Drive not ready".
  373.      A:   First, check the internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable to make sure it
  374.           is properly connected.  Second, make sure the terminator is
  375.           connected securely to the back of the CD-ROM drive.  Try both
  376.           with and without the terminator.
  377.  
  378. 29.  Q:   a.   I get the error "CDR 103: CD-ROM not High-Sierra or ISO-9660
  379.                Format Reading Drive X.  Abort, Retry or Ignore?" 
  380.           b.   My CD-ROM drive fails at random.
  381.      A:   First, check if the LASTDRIVE statement and TSLCDR.SYS driver are
  382.           loaded before a hard disk driver and/or a memory manager.  If so,
  383.           load the hard disk driver and/or memory manager first.  Second,
  384.           refer to the question above.

  387. 30.  Q:   Do you have a software development toolkit for the PAS?
  388.      A:   Please contact Media Vision Sales at 1-800-845-5870 to order the
  389.           Pro AudioSpectrum Developer's Toolkit for $79.95.  This toolkit
  390.           contains a 3 1/2" disk which contains drivers, utilities, source
  391.           codes for both DOS and MWINDOWS and a manual which contains a
  392.           software reference and a hardware reference.
